Let's talk about death
Don't worry, I won't get too dark with it.
Death, a quiet stillness, closing the act of life. We all tend to avoid talks related to death, because it tends to make us think- not like we don't do that already, but in a way that makes us confront our own mortality.
You are probably wondering why I'm suddenly talking about death , right? It's because I just finished watching the series I started yesterday and it got me thinking. βOne Dayβ is based on David Nichollsβ novel and it follows the story of two people and then visits their lives over almost two decades. It's a beautiful story, from beginning to end. I particularly liked the show's 80βs and 90βs setting and how after one night together, the main characters found their way back to each other, through friendship, shared growth and ultimately found love.
I wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone who's planning to watch the series but I have to because it's so moving and thought-provoking. The reason why death is on my mind today is because the female lead (Emma) passed away. It was a poignant scene, and I almost cried (though I didn't). The male lead, Dexter had a hard time adjusting to the loss, he fell back into his old drinking habit, and constantly reminisces about their time together. One scene stuck with me- they are both lying on the floor of his childhood home, she is reading to him from a book she fancied very much and she read a line to him that wentβ¦.
As someone who often wonders when I'm going to die, or rather how I'm going to die, what Emma said held a lot of weight. Because death is inevitable, we are all going to meet our ends. People will mourn, maybe for a few days, until we fade into a memory. And then, maybe a year later, they'll remember us on our anniversary. It's a sobering thought but it's humbling. Death shouldn't be a discussion we avoid and I don't think it should be the elephant in the room or a taboo subject.
And I'm so sorry for the spoiler but if you still want to have a full experience of the series, I'd urge you to watch it because it's a good one. One Day is definitely worth watching. It's a beautiful story about love, loss and the journey of life.
Till next time, my lovelies !

Why am I the only one bothered that you ruined the movie?!!
People not talking about death seems like a form of coping mechanism.
Most people donβt want to think about the sorrows.
Just like the way talking about sex seems like a bad thing in our society.
