UNPOPULAR OPINION II
I prefer old movies to new movies.
Old movies offer a delightful escape from reality, a world where perfect families, lavish lifestyles, and happy endings seem like a given. They feed my delusions. It's a comforting fantasy, a world where problems are solved neatly and life always has a silver lining. I think it's understandable why you'd prefer this escapism. When a movie is "too real," it can feel like a punch in the gut, dragging you back to your own struggles even when you just want to get away from it all.
Old movies, for me is like stepping into a warm, familiar dream that allows you to forget your worries for a while. New movies often tap into our anxieties and desires for the future. Like, what's the rush? This age and time is already chaotic, what do you mean time travel to 3035. No, thank you. I'll love to live in the misery of today and dream about the comfort of the past.
Oh, the sheer magnificence of those old period dramas! When I say 'period,' I don't mean the kind with modern-day sensibilities like 'Bridgerton.' I'm talking the real deal, like 'Pride and Prejudice' and its ilk! The way those love stories are woven, the subtle beauty of the dialogue, the exquisite acting... it's all top-notch. Those unspoken exchanges between characters, the hidden emotions and lingering glances, they're what make those romances feel so real, so achingly beautiful. It's like looking into a timeless window of love and yearning, and it makes me wonder if old love truly does hold a different kind of magic, a depth and complexity that sometimes gets lost in the rush of modern romance.
You can't even compare old cartoons to new ones. I mean, can you compare โTom and Jerryโ to โSpongeBobโ? Or โCars Toonโ( that animation where the cars have eyes and can talk) to โTurbo FASTโ. Old cartoons just have their own brand of humour and it's unmatched!!
And yes, I watch cartoons. Deal with it.
Bringing it home, we have old movies like โAkin and Paw Pawโ, โSuperstoryโ, and โPapa Ajascoโ. If you think about it, there's a certain magic to classic movies like these that new sitcoms just can't replicate.
It's no wonder that even in busy Nigerian households, everyone would find the time to gather around the television for these shared experiences. I remember being a kid, the whole family huddled together in front of the television, waiting for the movie to start. But those times it was k-dramas like โboys before flowerโ, โfaithโ, those old ones because we had to share my mum's love for Korean dramas ๐.
It's like those movies provided a rare opportunity for everyone to be in the same room, united by laughter and shared memories. Nowadays, with everyone glued to their screens, it's hard to find those moments of connection. Everyone is just in their rooms, streaming whatever they want and those shared experiences feel like a thing of the past.
Maybe that's why I find myself gravitating back to old movies, a reminder of a simpler time when families bonded over a shared love of cinema.
I'm not sure if it's just me but I find myself more drawn to old movies than new ones. Maybe it's the sense of nostalgia, or the slower pace of storytelling, but there's just something about them that just feels more timeless.
That will be it for now, my lovelies. And if you'd love to give old movies a try, here are some to go for -
Ten things I hate about you.
How to lose a guy in 10 days.
Any old movie featuring Adam Sandler (you'll laugh that tears will come out).
You can give Titanic a try, but it's a 5/10 for me.
Any of the old movies listed in the write-up.
Akpan and oduma, if it's still showing on Wap TV.
Lots of love!
